A FRESH CHAPTER'S 2019 KENYA GLOBAL EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM
by A Fresh Chapter
Mindy Buchanan
I met the founder of A Fresh Chapter, Terri, in 2012. I was relatively new to the oncology world and remember being truly blown away by what she was doing in the cancer survivorship space. In those many years since, I have witnessed the amazing work AFC continues to do, and the lives changed because of it.
I have been chosen to receive a one year Fellowship for A Fresh Chapter's 2019 Kenya Global Emerging Leaders Program. For two weeks in September 2019, I will travel to Kenya with fellow cancer advocates. While there, we will play a leadership role in locally-led cancer awareness and education events, volunteer in local communities, experience AFC’s innovative psychosocial support model, and participate in the initial discovery and development phase of an AFC Toolkit adapted for Kenya. This program is the first in a broader 5-year initiative which, by 2025, aims to touch a minimum of 10,000 Kenyans impacted by cancer. I am honored and excited to participate in this first year pilot program as part of the initiative.
I am lucky to be able to cover my expenses for this fellowship. But for many attending AFC's survivor/caregiver Odyssey programs, have had their finances destroyed by cancer. Please help me to ensure there are no barriers to these programs for them. All funds raised will be allocated to AFC's Scholarship Fund.
